In this case, the patient had two porcelain fused to metal crowns that had been in place for close to 30 years. One of the drawbacks to porcelain fused to metal crowns is that sometimes the metal substructure of the crowns can show through, especially at the margins. Newer materials have been developed to address this problem. Pressed ceramics and zirconia crowns offer superior esthetics because there is no metal in them and will not show a gray line at the margins. The old porcelain fused to metal crowns in this case were replaced with zirconia crowns to give a much more esthetic outcome.
